Have you ever left for tomorrow an activity that you had or wanted to do?
Today I want to talk to you about procrastination.
I am sure that you have heard about procrastination, but do you know what it is?
Procrastinate = Defer or postpone
WHY DO WE POSTPONE THINGS?
Many times people procrastinate because they DO NOT know the reason that leads them to leave things for another time.
My advice today is to analyze and ask yourself why you procrastinate
To make it easier for you to answer this question, I will tell you what the most common causes of procrastination are:
> You are uncomfortable or do not like what you have to do.
> You do not know how to do it.
> You feel like you do not have enough time.
> You do not know if you really want to do it or not.
> You have a block and you need someone to impulse you
You will see that by identifying the cause you will be able to improve in this aspect in your life since you will know where and how to attack it
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE POSTPONE?
Have you ever felt like every time you have a deadline you seem to finish the task the day before?
This phenomenon is explained by Parkinson’s Law
According to Parkinson, there are 3 rules that are always followed, and in this article, we will focus on the first one:
1) The work expands to fill the time available for its completion.
2) Expenses increase to cover all income.
3) The time spent on any item on the agenda is inversely proportional to its importance.
If we keep procrastinating, this law will always apply, meaning that until we have a deadline, the work we have to do will expand itself filling the time available to do it.
HOW TO STOP PROCRASTINATING:
Today I want to give you a couple of tips you can start using to beat procrastination.
> Establish deadlines.
If work expands until filling the time we have, it is important to set some deadlines allowing us to mark off the time for doing it.
> Divide the work into several tasks.
Dealing with small tasks will be easier for you than trying to face a big load of work.
> Give yourself some credit.
When accomplishing the task, take credit for it. Being aware of your wins will increase your motivation and it will make it easier to start other things you do not want to do.
Start being aware of the cause of your procrastination and apply these simple tips to stop postponing things you have or want to do.
